Who can refer?

The Pharmacy Programs Administrator (PPA) lists these eligible medical practitioners for a funded HMR:

  • General Practitioner
  • Specialist in Pain Medicine
  • Specialist Physician, including endocrinologists
  • Specialist Psychiatrist
  • Specialist in Palliative Medicine

Hospital pharmacists, nurses and allied health practitioners can identify a patient, then ask an eligible medical practitioner to refer.

PPA HMR eligibility and referral rules

The Australian Government funds the HMR program. The PPA administers it and processes claims. Australian Government overview of PPA.
